Monday 14th October sees the prestigious occasion that is World Photobook Day and, given our penchant for all things photo book related, we thought we’d take the opportunity to round up a selection of our favourites.
Join us as we explore a few of the past year’s best and most brilliant photo books, from those created by world-famous celebrities to those put together by CEWE customers. As a testament to the versatility of the photo book, we’ve gathered seven photo books that cover some very different themes, from stunning landscapes and scenery to never-before-seen images of rock music legends.
1- Northern Lights by Martin Kulhavy
At the beginning of 2019, we featured Martin Kulhavy and his incredible Northern Lights photo book, and it was so good we thought it deserved two parts! Photographing the Northern Lights is notoriously tricky – and that’s if you can even spot them at all – so capturing enough stunning images to fill a CEWE PHOTOBOOK truly is a feat to be commended.
Martin visited the Lofoten Archipelago with the aim of taking the best photos possible of the aurora, and he managed to do just that. His book begins by introducing the reader to his Nordic expedition with a short description of the area he visited and a brief overview of how the aurora are formed. If you’re hoping to recreate Martin’s incredible work, he also offers some insightful photography tips that will help you get your images just right.

2- Led Zeppelin by Led Zeppelin
Late last year, legendary rock band Led Zeppelin launched a 400-page photo book full of pictures and artwork from the group’s illustrious and long-spanning career. The book was curated by Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones and combines unseen photos from years gone by and contributions from photographers across the world.
Talking about the book, Jimmy Page commented: “We can really say that this is the authentic book of Led Zeppelin and I just hope that it really travels through to the fans and their imagination.”
We think this incredible book really shows the power of photos and keeping a lasting record of your memories – what better way to reflect on a legendary music career than immortalising a photo archive for fans across the world to enjoy?
If you’d like to get hold of your own copy of this book, you can do so here.
3- YUWA by Kiran Bhamra Cox
YUWA is a school situated in Jharkhand, India, that works with girls from impoverished families in the region with the aim of engaging them in team sports and education. Kiran visited India as part of a charity project alongside the organisation Asians In Football and documented the trip in a series of photographs, which he then used to produce a CEWE PHOTOBOOK.
Whilst he was there, Kiran also took the opportunity to teach photography to some of the children as a way of offering them something new to try out and perhaps even fall in love with. His book not only contains his own shots from the trip, but also features some of the images taken by the girls he spent time with.
You can find out more about Kiran’s project and see a glimpse into the resulting photo book here.
4- California Road Trip
We’re a little biased when it comes to this book, as it was created by a member of our very own Digital team here at CEWE UK HQ, but this makes it no less worthy of a place in our top 7! The book follows a journey taken by CEWE employee Kate and her best friend as they travelled across the sunshine state this summer. Stopping off in some incredible locations and experiencing some unique things, Kate and Emily documented their trip in photos and videos, which were then used to produce this gorgeous travel photo book.
We love the consistent style of the book throughout and the way the pages use a variety of layouts to house the many photos. This book is a real guide to what you can do with the CEWE Design Software, and you can read more about just how the book was designed here.
5- The Rihanna Book
When news broke that singer-turned-fashion and beauty entrepreneur Rihanna had released her own coffee table book full of never before seen images of herself, we knew it was bound to be something spectacular, and this had been confirmed in what we’ve seen so far. We think it’s safe to say it’s going to become one of our favourites of the year!
Titled ‘Rihanna’, the book is made up of over 1,050 colour images and 11 special inserts depicting all aspects of her multifaceted life, and we’re told we can expect an intimate glimpse into her personal life. Though the book has not yet launched, Rihanna herself has teased its contents over social media, sending Twitter into frenzied excitement as we’re promised a behind-the-scenes look into prestigious events such as the Met Gala.
Judging by what we’ve seen so far, this one-of-a-kind photo book is going to be something pretty special! It’s currently available for pre-order here.
6- Driving the Dolomites by Dr Saleem Moopen
This photo book is pretty special to us, as it was created by CEWE customer Dr Saleem Moopen and uploaded to our online Community pool. The book follows Dr Moopen on his road trip through the Italian Dolomites and showcases some truly breathtaking scenery. The best part about this book is that it’s fully viewable online, meaning you can flick through it and experience it for yourself right here. The pictures truly are something special, so we really recommend you take a look!
The CEWE Community is an online pool of photo books and calendars created and ordered by CEWE customers, and we’d be lying if we said there wasn’t a treasure trove of all kinds of creations for you to explore. Whether you’re looking for photo book design inspiration or you’re just interested in what others have created, your time will be well spent looking through our selection. Plus, did we mention that all submissions to the CEWE Community receive a £10 voucher? Even more reason to create a CEWE PHOTOBOOK!
7- BLACKPINK Summer Diary in Hawaii
Is this the ultimate holiday photo book? We think it just might be! Korean girl group BLACKPINK have taken the world by storm in 2019, and this was reflected with the launch of their limited-edition Summer Diary in Hawaii, which gave fans a closer look at their summer holiday. The photo book was released following the group’s first ever world tour, which took place earlier in the year.
The photo book package comes complete with the book in its own pink presentation case as well as some added photo merchandise. We love the sleek design, and the added presentation case is a gorgeous touch! (Did you know, you can add a presentation box to your next CEWE PHOTOBOOK?)
Summer Diary in Hawaii now appears to be out of stock, but fans can find out more about the book and its content here.
